Passenger Seat
In life, we often find ourselves fixated on being the drivers of our destinies, but the truth is, we're more often passengers, carried along by the unpredictable traffic of everyday life. It's a reminder that not every twist and turn in our journey needs to be meticulously planned or controlled. Sometimes, surrendering to life's flow can lead us to unexpected destinations and profound insights.
The control, as we perceive it, is a paradox—an illusion of authority that denies the deeper truth of our interconnectedness with the world around us. We are in the driver’s seat, at the same time, we are also (just) the passenger. In the practice of yoga this paradox is revealed in many different forms, one and the most obvious one being the breath. Much like the breath, which we can manipulate and guide but ultimately must surrender to, our attempts to control life's routes are fleeting. The excitement of being in the driver's seat is only temporary as the realization that true freedom lies in embracing the passenger seat. You take more breaths being a passenger than holding the wheel of control in your hands. And just like you notice the paradox of being the driver (creator) and passenger (observer) within you, you can notice the paradox outside yourself. Notice when you are clinging onto being the driver, yet you maybe should take the seat of the passenger (observer). In the same way also notice when you're avoiding being the driver (creator). Because what is also true is that “If anyone is magically going to appear and suddenly change your life for the better, just know that person is always going to be you.”
